About
Matthew Nicholson is a saxophonist, singer-songwriter and music producer from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. On stage he is a force of nature whose presence captivates his audience. His music is laid-back yet emotive and has evolved from an edgier pop sound to a mellow jazz-and-blues tone. He crosses stylistic boundaries and values simple melody over flashy technique, which allows the depth, character and darker shades of his music to shine through. As a songwriter he strives to create music that is honest and true to his vision while remaining accessible, with a story contained in each song.
Matthew has appeared as a guest soloist performing with the Cape Breton Orchestra on several occasions playing Alto Saxophone. He has been part of several cover bands and jazz bands and played gigs all around Cape Breton, and he currently plays with the jazz group, the 2x2 Quartet, and with the cover band No Insurance. His time with the rock/blues group Highway 125 brought him into the spotlight of Nova Scotia’s music scene in 2015. Matthew has performed at the Cape Breton Jazz Festival and the Sydney Waterfront Festival. He has recorded with various different artists and has produced songs with Sarah Ellen, and HoneyGuide.
